Campus Design
This project was to design a school building that can be incorporated into the new AHS design. We started with forming groups of people with different personalities and skills. We conducted empathy interviews. Next, we wrote How Might We statements (Fig. 1) and formed and Problem Statement. Next we tried to find answers to the problem statement and incorporate HMW (How Might We) statements into our ideas. Then, we started prototypes of anything from small classrooms to the whole campus design. We got several critiques and redesigned the campus as needed. We then went into the final stage and full designed a campus and shared space. We also had to budget the construction of the shared space (Fig. 2).
I learned a lot about budgeting and sustainable building materials. I learned that budgeting takes a lot longer than I thought it would and it requires tons of research. Once I did all the research and found prices the actual budgeting part was really easy. Sometimes I’d have to find different materials to stay within budget, but other than that it was really fun and easy (Fig.5). I also learned that sustainable materials are really important. They make houses produce less pollution, are more efficient in heating, and air quality, and they make people healthier (Air Quality Index).
My group did a good job of designing the school.(Fig.3 and Fig 4) The only problem was that only two of us did all of the work. I learned as a collaborator that you can’t force people to do work if they refuse. The best way to get people to work is to let them work on things that interest them even if it means you have to do the less enjoyable stuff. I wish I could have done more for my group. I did some of the prototypes and the sustainable research and budgeting. I feel that I could haved help my group member with the campus design and possibly written the proposal.
I think it is important that students have input in a school design because they are the ones using it. What’s the point of using a building if everyone hates it? I think students should get some input, but also let professionals do the final design so that it is perfect and realistic. A guest speaker told us that the best buildings are the ones that users got input in.
