Truth of Happiness
We read Brave New World and then did research to learn about the truth of happiness. After that we made videos to explain the truth of happiness. I made a animated video down below.
Socialization and Mask Reflection
The socialization and mask project was about how we were socialized, what kind of mask we hide behind and how the cycle of socialization affects others. We started the project learning about culture (what is it?). We looked at the mores, folkways, and taboos of culture. We then looked at the different identity categories and how they are affected by society. We read Harrow’s Cycle of Socialization and annotated it. This article was the main base of the whole project and our exhibition. After, doing background research we made ours masks and painted them. We also wrote essays on how we were socialized or major moments of our lives that had to do with the cycle of socialization. Our final product was a maze like exhibition that went through the whole cycle of socialization. We had to work in different design groups to make the rooms and hallways of the maze and correctly portray the cycle of socialization.
Project Reflection
1.Explain how you grew as a writer in this project.
I grew as a writer in this project by stepping out of my comfort zone. I usually prefer to write research papers or essays instead of stories, but that’s all we did last year so I wanted to do something different. One of the choices was a moment in time. A moment in time was about a time when something happened to you and it was a big impact on how you were socialized. I had to use lots of details and certain aspects of writing that I wasn’t used to. It was challenging to write a personal story and it help me grow in an area that I’m not strong with when it comes to writing.
2. What are your largest take-aways from this project and how have they transformed the way you see the world?
The content was the the largest take-away for me because of recent events in our government and the world as a whole it made me think deeper about the struggles that others have to face because of their race in particular. I’m a big fan of women’s rights and well versed in what women have to deal with in the workplace, at home, and in the country. With recent events with certain political leaders belittling women, women’s rights was all I really focused on. In the recent months I’ve started to notice the bigger picture of white privilege and how racist this country is. If someone asked me a year ago what Black Lives Matter meant to me, I would have said all lives matter. This (in my opinion) wasn’t the message the were trying to get across. After learning about the cycle of socialization I’ve given that idea more thought, especially after the shootings in Baton Rouge, Dallas, and in other cities. Now I feel that the message is that black lives matter too. I feel like all the supporters agree that all lives matter, but because of the more public and widely broadcasted acts of racial discrimination against the African American community the movement is showing that black lives matter too. There is acts of racial discrimination everywhere even with our president- elect’s comments on other races and ethnic groups. However, I already felt strongly about the comments made as they were highly racist, my point was this project has given me the chance to look at a large movement in a new light.
3. What were your goals as a group worker and what challenges/success did you have reaching your goals?
The goals I had as a group worker were to take the initiative as a leader and help my group (project managers) help other groups make the best room they could possibly make. I had some trouble at first because our group was really unfocused at some points in the beginning (including me). We eventually were able to get focused once construction began and we were able to move around freely to help certain groups. No one in the group was a specific leader it was more democratic. This threw part of my goal out the window, but I could still be a leader to other groups and help them in anyway I can. I feel like our whole group found success in helping groups and leading each other.
4. Describe what you did as a group member and how it contributed to the success of our exhibition.
As a project manager I contributed to the success of the exhibition by supervising other groups, refocusing them, help build their rooms, and other miscellaneous tasks. I was able to help our actions and directions for change group build their room and keep them on task. I helped make signs for different groups, and refresh people's memory on certain parts of information for their section in the cycle of socialization. I think I’d give myself an -A because I did a good job, but I had some room for improvements.
